We fix far more boilers than we swap out, but there does come a point where more repairs stop making financial sense.
The clearest warning signs
Worth thinking about replacement if several of these apply to you:
- The boiler is over 12–15 years old.
- You've paid for two or more repairs in the past couple of years.
- Replacement parts are getting harder to find or are being discontinued.
- Your heating bills are creeping up with no change in how you use it.
- The boiler is non-condensing, meaning a lot of heat is escaping straight up the flue.
- Radiators are taking noticeably longer to warm up than they used to.
Safety signs that need acting on straight away
A yellow or orange flame where you'd expect a crisp blue one, sooty black marks around the casing, or a carbon monoxide alarm going off all mean the boiler should be switched off and looked at by a Gas Safe registered engineer without delay.
What a replacement involves
Swapping like-for-like in the same spot is usually a one-day job. Relocating the boiler, changing fuel type, or converting from a conventional system to a combi will take longer. We agree a fixed price with you before starting and register the new appliance for its manufacturer warranty once the job's finished.
