A dripping tap is probably the plumbing complaint we hear most often, and thankfully it's usually one of the cheapest to put right.
Traditional taps
Taps with separate hot and cold heads that need several turns to open and close rely on a rubber washer. Once that washer hardens or splits, it can no longer form a seal, and a straightforward replacement sorts it out.
Quarter-turn and mixer taps
Modern taps generally use a ceramic disc cartridge instead. These can't be re-washered, the whole cartridge gets replaced as a unit, matched to the tap's make and size.
Other possible causes
Limescale on the seat, a worn valve seating, or unusually high mains pressure can all cause a drip that comes straight back after a repair. Water in the West Midlands is moderately hard, so scale is always worth ruling out.
When it's worth calling someone
If you can't isolate the water supply, the tap has seized up, or the drip is coming from the body of the tap rather than the spout, it's worth getting a plumber to look at it before a small leak turns into damage to a cabinet or ceiling.
