A boiler running normally should be more or less silent. Anything louder is worth getting checked before it turns into a breakdown.
Kettling: a rumbling, boiling sound
A noise like a kettle coming up to the boil usually means limescale or sludge has narrowed the heat exchanger, causing water to overheat and steam in localised pockets. Left unchecked it puts extra strain on the exchanger and shortens the boiler's working life.
Banging and knocking through the pipework
Sharp bangs as the heating starts up or shuts off are usually pipework expanding against a joist or clip, or occasionally trapped air. Re-clipping loose pipework and bleeding the radiators generally sorts it.
Whistling, humming and vibration
A whistling sound often means flow is restricted through a partly closed valve. Humming or vibration usually comes from the pump, often worn bearings, or the pump running on too high a speed setting.
