Every condensing boiler produces acidic condensate that runs away through a plastic pipe. Where that pipe is routed outside and the temperature falls below freezing, it can block with ice and cause the boiler to lock out.
How to spot it
Look out for a boiler that won't fire after a cold night, a gurgling or bubbling noise from the appliance beforehand, and a fault code referring to condensate or a blockage. The pipe itself is usually white plastic, around 22mm or 32mm, running out through the wall close to the boiler.
Thawing it out safely
Only tackle this if you can reach the pipe from ground level:
- Pour warm, not boiling, water along the exposed section, paying particular attention to bends and the open end.
- A hot water bottle held against the frozen section works just as well.
- Once it's thawed, reset the boiler and it should fire up as normal.
- Never use boiling water, as it can split the pipe, and never climb a ladder to reach it in icy conditions.
Stopping it happening again
Wrapping the pipe in weatherproof lagging, fitting a wider pipe, or re-routing the condensate to drain internally into a soil stack are all permanent fixes.
