Low boiler pressure: how to fix it

Low boiler pressure fix in the West Midlands, clean white wall-mounted combi boiler

Low pressure is by far the most common reason a boiler stops heating, and in a lot of cases it's something you can sort out yourself.

What the pressure should read

Aim for somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bar with the system cold. Under about 0.7 bar you'll typically get a lockout; over 2.5 bar cold, you risk the pressure relief valve letting go.

Re-pressurising, step by step

With the boiler off and the system cold:

  • Locate the filling loop, usually a braided silver hose, or a built-in key underneath the boiler.
  • Open both valves gradually and listen for water flowing into the system.
  • Watch the gauge and close both valves once it reaches around 1.2 bar.
  • Reset the boiler and check it fires up properly.

When to stop and call someone

If the pressure drops again within a few days, or you can't locate a filling loop at all, stop there and get it booked in. If you'd rather hand it to someone qualified, we work right across Halesowen, Stourbridge, Dudley and the wider West Midlands, and we book urgent repairs in fast, usually next day.
